Before the story, the invitation:
On Monday, September 11 at 7 PM ET and Wednesday, September 13 at noon ET, I’m offering my free Story Source Workshop over on Zoom.
Join us for guided visualizations and writing prompts, as well as a healthy dose of mythic wisdom. The event is designed to help you come into a new relationship with your creativity.
She told me I needed to go on a quest into the Creative Otherworld and keep company with the Folk of the Imaginal Realm.
Perhaps you’ve heard me tell a version of KnotWork Storytelling’s origin story.
I was tending my Autumn Equinox fire in 2021 when Mongfind, a mostly-forgotten Irish Sovereignty goddess, essentially told me to start a podcast.
Mongfind is more than a muse. (That’s a word that always feels a little “meh” to me, but it worked for the title and it’s Friday afternoon and we’d all benefit if I ditched the perfectionism and just hit send.) Mongfind is a guide, a companion, a mysterious manuscript who has only revealed a few scattered pages of her story—so far.
Mongfind made it clear: it was time to write with the guides, gods, and ancestors.
Two years and more than 45 episodes later, I think I’ve managed to hear and heed the guidance.
It’s a rare and wonderful thing to truly take direction from the unseen world, so I mention this not to brag that I’m doing right by the gods, but to invite you to open yourself to both hear and heed the instructions when they come.
To catch the whispers of the guides, gods, and ancestors… It doesn’t tend to happen by accident.
Just today I went searching for my journal from that time. All that happened before the “Voice from the Fire” was just as important as that magic moment of contact.
How Do We Talk to the Guides & “Download the Unseen”?
I was fresh from a weekend class at the Sacred Center Mystery School, where I’ve been a student for close to two decades. The focus of that particular training was “Downloading the Unseen.” Clearly, my psychic soil was already well-prepared…
And then, on the morning of the Equinox, I made the time in the midst of the usual catch-the-bus hustle to watch the full Harvest Moon set over the Shawangunk Ridge. Even my fabulously pragmatic teenager declared it “witchy.”
As the sun rose and the moonglow faded to memory, I sat on my front porch and wrote:
Here I am, being something very close to “exactly who I am” in daily life. It begs the question then: what does it mean to long for more?
The spiritual gave way to prosaic real fast (as it does). I fell into questions about my work and the online creative entrepreneur’s endless mission: how to spread my message and get more people to the circle.
Blessedly, unexpectedly, as the first stars appeared in the sky that night, it seems that the “more” was ready to reveal itself.
There is more “more” coming soon. The next season of KnotWork Storytelling is coming your way on September 20.
But First… How to Access Your Own Story Source (Harvest Moon & Equinox Fires Optional)
It’s going to be hard to replicate the magic of that moment in 2021, but the good news is that we don’t have to wait for the peak experience or the alignment of the heavens to access creative source.
There are practices and tools that can help ready you tap into your own generative magic and reach the “something more,” in whatever way you define that.
As I mentioned at the top, I’ll be offering the Story Source Workshop on September 11 and 13. I would love to meet you there and stand with you amongst the most potent elements of creative possibility.
